Is it time for D.C.A. to discuss the possibility of AKC
registration of the descendants of the
Dalmatian-Pointer cross?
Response by Michelle Gossett
For me, this issue comes down to several basic questions. Maybe this is oversimplification, but it works for me….
1) Are the backcross dogs Dalmatians? YES! Without A Doubt! Which to me means they should be allowed to move forward with AKC registration.
2) Can the backcross dogs help with the urate stone forming problem in Dalmatians? Probably – all research points to his as being a way to prevent the typical urate stones that Dalmatians form from their high uric acid levels.
3) Should research continue to help reduce stone disease in the current population of high uric acid Dals? OF COURSE! But the backcross project is a way to prevent the problem before it occurs, which is an even better answer.
4) Would I breed to a backcross dog? Only if the dog offers the other variables that I need for improvement in my bitch. It would never be the only factor for me to consider in planning any breeding.
These are the things that I considered before sending my ballot in. And it was definitely marked YES!
Thanks,
Michelle Gossett
