Is it time for D.C.A. to discuss the possibility of AKC registration fo the descendants of the Dalmatian-Pointer cross?
If everyone has been reading all the comments on the various lists, there is no need to say any of it again here.
In 1984, I was neither a member of DCA nor did I have a dalmatian. I got my first dalmatian in the late 1980's. He came from backyard breeders and never had even a hearing test. I knew nothing about dalmatians or the health problems associated with them. Over the years I have learned, studied and tried to keep abreast of the ongoing problems in the breed I love.
I was at the national show this year "08" and talked with people at the LUA booth. Looked at the dogs and watched the presentation. I have to say that the line up of the LUA dogs was not much different than a line up at an AKC show. There were several very nice looking dogs in there and some that were not.
While I can understand people voting NO on this ballot, I can also understand people voting YES. Voting YES does not mean that the LUA dogs will be automatically registered with AKC. The ballot says to "discuss the possibility of AKC registration" The letter from Dr. Garvin also states that a negative vote will cause "DCA will continue to encourage discussion on the topics of the low uric acid progeny, and support further testing, research and education, but take no action regarding possible future AKC registration." To me this means a vote of NO means no possible future registration for these dogs.
From everything I have read and LUA dog will not manifest urate stones.  It means that dogs' uric acid level is the same as any other dog out there.  I know too many people who have had dogs block of urate crystals or stones.
While I think there needs to be more scientific testing done, I cannot vote against future discussion with AKC.
My vote is YES
